On Seeing Greenfinches

For the time of year quite a pleasant day
Something of great beauty to take me far away
In a June afternoon breezy and bright
Perched on a wire paddock fence in the afternoon sunlight
A small flock of greenfinches a source for joy
I used to see the males when i was a boy
Above their breeding territories in April and May
Performing their butterfly like aerial courtship display
Three to eight white eggs with blackish markings in cup shaped nest on fork of tree
Of grass, moss and twigs lined with hair from the ground hard to see
From mid April in the north and all through May
The dullish green females are known to lay
Introduced into Australia from Lands far away
On seeing them bring back good memories to me today
