Though this is going back some four decades in time
Against the best 800 metres runners in the Country he did compete
Tall and lean and athletic he was quick on his feet
Back in the days when his hair was light brown
One of the admired young heroes of the town
But time as is saaid becomes everyone's foe
And going back the years this now seems long ago
Often see him in the park walking with his wife
Their grandchildren now are in the prime of life
The effects of a motor car accident on him does show
Nowadays his fastest walking pace is slow
The hair on his balding head is silver grey
Who would believe that looking at him today
That years ago at 800 metres he competed against and often beat the Country's best
And was never found to be wanting when put to the test
In his late sixties a champion athlete of the past
But few things in life ever does seem to last
And only the memories with him now remain
Of what used to be but will not be again.
