The ambulance driver John Kelleher from life has passed away
An octogenarian who was widely liked and known
One the people of Millstreet felt proud for to claim for their own
In his prime years John Kelleher was handsome, athletic and tall
As a pole vaulter he was Millstreet's greatest of all
He comepeted with success against Ireland's best
And he was never found to be wanting when put to the test
Quite an amiable fellow in his own unassuming way
Of his many life achievements he never had much to say
That actions speaks louder than words as a truism remain
The meaning in this it's own self does explain
A self coached pole vaulter in his physical prime
In ageing sports fans of Duhallow memories of him live on in time
In pole vaulting competitions in Ireland he seldom finished out of a place
Win or lose he always had a smile on his face
In sports as a pole vaulter he was unique in Millstreet
Against the best of his time he did compete
But there was more to him than being good at sports in good example he led the way
Among many of those who admired him he is resting today
In death he is one well worthy of recall
And this last night and day is ahead of us all
Hope his parting from life for him a painless release
John Kelleher the great man may he rest in peace.
