On Short Beaked Echidnas

Short beaked echidnas or spiny anteaters scientifically classisfied as monotreme
Along with other echidna and platypus are egg laying mammals strange as this may seem
With their sharp front claws they dig for ants in the ground
Always on their own in large numbers they  never abound
With spines for protection like the Eurasian hedgehog but not related in any way
Since hedgehogs give birth to live young and eggs never lay
The echidnas when under threat partly bury themselves with their sharp spines sticking out
And the attacker is usually deterred with a bloodied painful snout
In the warmth of their pouch their one egg gives forth life and to a young echidna grow
And to dig for ants and insects the only life of they will come to know
In Winter they hibernate for a few months underground from the cold
And they have an average of a ten year life span in their wild state which is not very old
Quite beautiful slow moving creatures but rather timid and shy
Echidnas or spiny anteaters are the names they are known by.
