Hares

Hares unlike rabbits do not live in burrows in the ground
And unlike rabbits in large numbers do not abound
To escape from predators they depend on their speed and dodging skill
And they can move quite fast even when running uphill

The female hare gives birth to four fully developed leverets two or three times a year
That their young become self sufficent quite quickly is obviously clear
In different parts of their territory their mother hides them in long grass well out of sight
And individually comes to them for to suckle milk from her in the darkness of night

The shrill cries of a dying hare mauled by greyhounds is not pleasant to hear
In coursing parks many of them die every year
Nowadays park coursing greyhounds are muzzled which is a big improvement just the same
Netting of hares for park coursing will never have a good name

Some hares do live up to twelve years old
And many stories of them have been written and told
Shy creatures for their survival they rely on their dodging skills and speed
One can say of them they are quite amazing indeed.
